VEDEK BAREIL (THEY CALL ME!)

As you doubtlessly know from listening to the show it's no great secret that we have a soft spot for tragically short-lived Bajoran spiritual leader, Vedek Bareil Antos. Ever since first popping up in conversation way back during our third episode, he's become a go-to running joke and - some would say - beloved podcast mascot. Well, in honor of the close of our first full year of podcasting we have decided to gift unto all of you a secret project that has been long under construction. The way we figure it, all great heroes deserve an anthem. And now, thanks to Subspace Transmissions, Vedek Bareil has his!

Lyrics:

Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Ba-Bareil
Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Bareil/ Vedek Bareil
They Call Me!
Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Bareil/ Vedek Bareil

First son of Bajor/ Arm 'round the major
Prophet chosen playa/ Snuff Cardassian danger
Hot like a bout of the Zanthi fever/ Voices from the temple and I'm the receiver
Let me take your pagh and make you a believer
Vedek to the people, and never a deceiver
Cuz I got flowers in my garden, and my heart'll never harden
Step up on the Springball court/ Guess what? You'll be smartin'!
Startin' to feel my flow (Yeah you know)/ Like watching a Feloran Bromeliad grow
Do I trust Sisko? I dunno/ But cray-cray Kai, batty Winn gotta go!

Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Bareil/ Vedek Bareil
They Call Me!
Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Bareil/ Vedek Bareil

Hey there girl/ Look into my orb
Think about all/ The love you could absorb
I get down, yo/ Like a Gratitude Fest
No life support, don't need no rest
Like Philip Anglim, forever best
Save your positronic implant, me I'm blessed!
Resurrect myself, no stress no mess no jest
Monastery to the mic/ My spiritual quest
Rhymes from the soul to make you all heal
Power in the words, the Opaka ideal
Dukat, you a fool cuz I keep it Ba-real
Spinning records till dawn like a dabo wheel!

Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Bareil/ Vedek Bareil
They Call Me!
Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Bareil/ Vedek Bareil
Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Bareil/ Ba-Ba-Bareil

#70 - STAR TREK TNG: REDEMPTION

Is there any conceivable way to follow up the titanic triumph of "Best of Both Worlds?" That was the issue faced by the creative team behind The Next Generation in the spring of 1991. Their solution? To delve deeply into a previously under-explored fan favorite character, and blow up the series' continued story arcs involving the Klingon empire and shadowy, ever-present Romulan threat. But was their effort good enough to deserve mention in the same breath as their previous Borg-tacular two-parter? This week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton, along with special guest Nick Eagland, take turns sitting in the High Council throne and debating whether "Redemption" belongs in the canon of great feature-length television Trek tales. As the trio discuss all of the Gowron vs. Duras drama, Worf's eternal quest for honor and Data's command challenges, they also strive to determine how well the parts form a whole and whether or not this Klingon-centric saga warranted two heavily hyped hours to tell.

#69 - STAR TREK VS STAR WARS

Since the summer of 1977 it's been the most tumultuous debate in geek culture. Which franchise is superior: Gene Roddenberry's optimistic idea-driven utopia or George Lucas's scruffy, swashbuckling ode to the adventure serials of yore? Well, with The Force Awakens mere days away, and Star Trek Beyond soaring into theatres this summer, it's high time to settle this fiery argument. Hence, this week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton, along with returning guest David Borys, are throwing down the gauntlet and pitting these two titans against each other in 12 grueling competitive categories. Which franchise boasts the best heroes and villains? Aliens? Philosophy? Expanded Universe? Storytelling? Two will enter, but only one can emerge victorious. So don't miss out on this high spirited conversation that's guaranteed to inspire passion no matter which side you come down on!

#68 - STAR TREK'S BEST RECURRING CHARACTERS

In Star Trek the main crew may be the heart of the show, but it's the supporting players that really give it its dynamic punch. Having already picked out the Most Annoying Recurring Guest Characters, this week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton instead shine the spotlight on the recurring scene stealers who truly energize the show every time they show up. From one seriously badass Andorian, to a certain no-nonsense Bajoran Enterprise-D ensign and Starfleet's unlikely first Ferengi officer, we celebrate all those fantastic figures who may not get mentioned in the title credits, but are indispensable all the same.

#67 - THE PSYCHOLOGY OF GEORDI LA FORGE

One of the key themes that unites all of the various Star Trek shows and movies is the notion of the crew being a makeshift family unit. And, just as with real families, there's always an oddball in the bunch. This week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton examine the franchise's most unusually enigmatic hero, the Enterprise-D's engineer extraordinaire Geordi La Forge. Considerably less fleshed out than fellow Next Gen crewmates Riker, Data, Worf, Troi and so on, LeVar Burton's Geordi is in many ways a mystery, with few well-defined traits and very little emotional growth or internal life. What are we to make of his preference for close friendships with mechanical beings? Or his undeniably strange love life and aloof workplace disposition? By examining spotlight episodes, such as "Booby Trap," "The Mind's Eye," "Aquiel" and "Relics," this episode seeks to reveal some of the crucial concepts and ideas that inform the man, the myth and the legend that is Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge.

#66 - STAR TREK TNG: THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

In the spring of 1990 The Next Generation, at the end of its series redefining third season, dropped a metaphorical isoton bomb on viewers with the brilliantly conceived cliffhanger finale "The Best of Both Worlds: Part 1." Now viewed as one of the show's most legendary moments, the episode held audiences captive in wait for the season four premiere resolution, instantly entered the pantheon of all-time Trek iconography, and transformed the Borg from a weird, yet cool, idea to full-fledged series Big Bads. So how, 25 years later, does this all-timer two-part saga hold up? Find out this week as hosts Cam Smith, Tyler Orton and Benjamin Yong relive Picard and crew's shining moment and weigh in on the lasting impact of the two episodes, how seamlessly they fit together and whether the bracing excitement of yesterday can still be tapped into after countless revisits. Plus, as a bonus, the trio also discuss where the franchise's future may take the Borg, and express their utter bewilderment as to why Shelby was never brought back. Enjoy!

Unbreakable bonds are often formed under great pressure. But does that adage hold true in Starfleet? This week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton take the classic Zack Attack hit "Friends Forever" to heart as they recount Star Trek's most famous BFFs, and debate how realistic their relationships would be in the real world. From the iconic Kirk/Spock bromance, to Crusher and Troi's private advice sessions and Bashir and Garak's friendly lunchtime interrogations, this fun-filled hour is your ticket to play third wheel to the franchise's most inseparable dynamic duos.

In this emergency episode - recorded mere hours after this revelation came to light - breathless hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton strive to unpack their own thoughts on the shocking development and the many complications surrounding it. Over the course of their discussion, they debate the viability of the CBS All Access streaming business model, ponder the creative roads executive producer Alex Kurtzman may take the franchise down, and offer up their own suggestions as to what they'd like to see come January 2017. In this second spook-tacular holiday special, hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton grade Star Trek's many memorable examples of characters donning elaborate makeup and/or attire in order to complete a crucial mission. From Janeway's campy descent into serial-inspired silliness, to Kirk's hammy gangster act and Troi's badass Romulan make-over, we weigh in on each participant's commitment to transformation, as well as debate whether said disguise would bring home any awards at a rocking Halloween party costume contest. #62 - STAR TREK TNG: ENCOUNTER AT FARPOINT

Star Trek, bless its heart, doesn't have a spectacular track record when it comes to extended premieres. But does this hold true for what many consider the very best series? For this month's Two-Parter Throwback hosts Cam Smith, Tyler Orton and Benjamin Yong, along with returning guest Julia Dilworth, are travelling back to 1987 in order to take another exploratory spin around Farpoint on the inaugural journey of the ultra-slick Enterprise-D. Does the episode - which features not only the introduction of the new crew, but also the iconic Q - hold up as a solid sci-fi adventure? And how successful an introduction is it? For the answers to these burning these questions, as well as so many others, join in on this madcap audio journey filled with giant jellyfish romance, awkward Wesley hijinx, feelings of great joy and gratitude and, of course, bad Picard impressions!

#61 - CHARACTERS WHO MUST SUFFER

While there are certainly always risks associated with being a member of Starfleet, it sure does seem like a key handful of individuals pay for their daring lifestyle of adventure and exploration far more than others. This week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton examine four crucial franchise favorites who the creative team appeared to take boundless pleasure in running through the metaphorical ringer again and again. From falling victim to psychic assaults, cloning, unexpected alien impregnation and falling barrels, these unlucky four have been run through the gamut far more than most - raising the question as to whether their torture was part of a larger character goal or just plain old mean.

#58 - TREK DOES TIME TRAVEL

Since the groovy 19th century glory days of Mark Twain and H.G. Wells, popular fiction has thrived on stories in which protagonists journey to alternate time periods in search of romance, adventure and discovery. Given it's mission statement, how could Star Trek ever resist such an irresistible fount of creative inspiration? This week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton channel their inner-Marty McFly and take a fast-paced tour through the franchise's many explorations of this classic sci-fi concept, and break down the six types of  time travel tales. BONUS EPISODE 10 - "STAR TREK: NEMESIS"

When it was released on December 13, 2002, the TNG crew's fourth and final cinematic endeavor, Nemesis, was pretty much an insta-flop, both critically and commercially, and killed the franchise's big screen aspirations for several years. However, in this week's special Film Flashback episode, hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton, along with returning guest Tony Geluch, place the Enterprise E's climactic voyage under the movie microscope, and strive to determine the project's redeeming qualities and whether it deserves all of the hate so often hurled it's sorry way. Where does Tom Hardy's Shinzon rank in the realm of Starfleet-loathing villains? How does Stuart Baird fare as a series newbie director? Are the actors given intriguing and fresh material to play? And how satisfyingly does the flick bid adieu to this beloved cast? We answer all of these questions, and so many more, in this, our swan song spin across the silver screen with Picard, Riker, B-4 and all of your beloved Trek faves!
